DUBBEL TABOE
Inmiddels kan ze er goed over praten, maar dat is niet altijd zo geweest, zegt Linda: op PMDD zit een dubbel taboe. “Op mentale klachten zit nog steeds een taboe, op menstruatie ook – tel dat maar bij elkaar op. Zelfregie is daarom cruciaal om de juiste hulp te krijgen. Dat begint bij het bijhouden van je cyclus, gevolgd door een diagnose. Dan kun je het eindelijk plaatsen en kun je zoeken naar oplossingen. Het hielp mij ook heel erg om contact te zoeken met lotgenoten. Je bent nooit alleen.”
Op dit moment is er nog geen kant-en-klare vragenlijst om PMDD mee vast te stellen, zoals die er wel is voor bijvoorbeeld depressie, zegt Kamperman. “Dus het is eerste wat we met ons onderzoek naar buiten willen brengen, is een gevalideerde vragenlijst. We moeten het fenomeen in kaart brengen om onderzoek te
stimuleren. Want zonder onderzoek worden richtlijnen niet gemaakt, en zonder richtlijnen wordt je behandeling niet goed vormgegeven. Het is een lange reeks sloten waar we nog overheen moeten springen. Dat kan jaren duren, maar er is een begin.”
